19-Mile Brushheap Mountain Challenge
Also a 10 mile hike/run
No fees, no frills, no advance registration required
Previous trail running experience recommended for those participating in the 19-miler. Limited drinking water with only three water stations. (It is highly advised that you CARRY A WATER BOTTLE!!!)
Route Descriptions:
19-Mile Brushheap Mountain Challenge
- Start at new picnic pavilion on Road 73, head east and go right on Road 106. Cross Little Missouri River bridge, and continue 2.1 miles on Road 106 to “Winding Stairs” trailhead. Left on Little Missouri Trail and cross Blaylock Creek. Continue 2.4 miles on Little Missouri Trail, crossing Little Missouri River into the “Winding Stairs” area. Continue another 0.6 mile along “Wild” Little Missouri River to 1st water station. Right on Viles Branch Trail, cross Little Missouri River followed by 13 crossings of Viles Branch over 3.5 miles to the 2nd water station. Right on Athens-Big Fork Historic Postal Service Trail over Brushy and Brushheap Mountains for 3.2 miles to the 3rd water station. Right on Road 106 for 4.1 miles to the 4th water station at the “Winding Stairs” trailhead. Continue 2.1 miles back to speed bump at Area “C” bathhouse in Albert Pike.
10-Mile Little Missouri River Hike/Run
- Same course as the 19-mile, but turnaround at the 1st water station. Return same route.
